Time for a new adventure

September 9, 2013 By Anthony & Erin -

New Adventure

I’ve been sitting on this not-so-secret secret for a while now. Two months? Something like that. It’s been really hard! There have been a few hints here and there if you’ve been paying attention, but I’ve only said it to a few people (mostly clients) since Anthony hadn’t turned in his notice at work and I didn’t want it getting out all over Facebook where I’m friends with some of his co-workers. But last week Anthony turned in his notice and now I can tell everyone!

At the end of September, we’re moving to Denver! When we moved back to the US from Germany (back in 2009) we knew we wanted to move somewhere fun where we could hike, camp, and do fun out-doorsy things like we did in Germany. But getting a job was HARD back then, and when I landed a position at a company in Indianapolis, it seemed like the best option. We moved in with my parents for a few months while Anthony looked for a job, then moved to our apartment in October after he got a position with the city.

I ended up quitting my job the following summer because it was the WORST job I’ve ever had (due to some horrible bosses and coworkers) and I would come home from work and drink wine and cry every day.

Then I started my design business, and Anthony kept on at his job which he didn’t love, but eventually my business started doing well enough to pay our bills and we were able to save up some money.

And then we realized that we’re getting pretty damn close to being 30 and need to get a move on with this adventure before we have kids and a house and any sort of real responsibilities outside of our rent and car payment.

So, we took a look at our finances and guesstimated that I could cover our expenses despite the cost of living difference in Denver while Anthony looks for a job.

I’m not going to lie, being the only breadwinner is kind of stressing me out since (as many of you know) nothing is guaranteed in running your own business. I have clients booked for the rest of the year, but I always worry about anything and everything and am of course picturing all sorts of scenarios where we have to dip into our savings and all my clients just disappear and then we’re destitute and homeless.

Which would never really happen because we HAVE saved up and have friends and family who love us and would help us if needed, but my brain just likes to think of all the worst possible things.

ANYHOW, I’m actually really excited because we already have some trips planned and there are all sorts of fun meetup groups to go do things! Plus, we have some great friends out there (that we met in Germany) and we’re planning fun things to do with them which I’m really looking forward to!

One of the best things about my business is that I really can do it from just about anywhere. I’m not quite as location independent as I’d like to be, but since my business is really just run online and via email it won’t really affect my clients when I move. Well, except during the time that I’m actually moving and driving across the country (I’m hiring someone to help cover emergencies during this time), but once I’m set up it will be just the same as always. Love it!

Can’t wait to get out there and start the next chapter of our lives!
